Stepdaughter of Jazz trailblazer Don Cherry, Neneh forged her own groundbreaking blend of pop, dance, hip-hop, and R&B, presaging the emergence of both alternative rap and hip-hop.

She was born in Stockholm, the daughter of West African percussionist Ahmadu Jah and artist Moki Cherry. Raised in Sweden and the US she dropped out of school at 14-years-old and in 1980 relocated to sing with punk group The Cherries.

After brief flings with The Slits and the Nails she began rapping in the city and caught the eye of musician Cameron McVey, who helped her release debut LP ‘Raw Like Sushi'. Stand-out single ‘Buffalo Stance' was an international smash that neatly summarised the album's eclectic fusion of pop smarts and hip-hop energy.
